New York City Amateur Golf: Lowe shoots 68 to take lead in Men’s division

Matt Lowe fired a 68 to take the first-round lead in the Men’s division of the New York City Amateur, which is being staged at LaTourette Golf Course.

Lowe is no stranger to big performances in the NYC Amateur as he won it in 2018.

The field started with 152 players competing for championships in the Men’s, Senior (over 50) and Super Senior Divisions (over 60) playing one round of golf.

The 84 Men’s division competitors was cut to the low 36 players and ties and those players will return for another 36 holes on Sunday for a three-round cumulative score.

Lowe, who holds the LaTourette course record and turned professional for several years but has retained his amateur status, leads by one stroke over Thomas Lee, Bear Carlson, Michael Foley and Senior golfer Harris Podvey.

Defending champion Michael Stamberger missed the cut.

Podvey leads the Senior division with a 69, one shot ahead of Patrick Pierson.

Jay Blumenfeld’s 70 leads the Super Seniors, two shots ahead of his closest competitor David Mattana.
