The 12-year major league veteran hasn’t played an MLB game since 2020. That seemed to be the end of the slugger’s illustrious baseball career, but he’s ready to get back into it in independent ball.
Murphy said, per a Ducks press release:
“This game is part of my soul. And my passion for playing grew as great as ever when I discovered certain things that I believe will enable me to be productive on the field again.”
Murphy, 37, played his first seven seasons with the New York Mets and was a postseason hero in 2015. The NLCS MVP had seven home runs and 11 RBI in the NLDS and NLCS as he led the Mets to a World Series, where they lost to the Royals in five games.

He signed with the Washington Nationals in 2016 and went on a tear, hitting 90 doubles in his first two seasons — leading MLB in that category both years. He was also an All-Star selection in those two years.
