The count of homeless students includes any student who had no fixed, regular, adequate nighttime residence, according to the state. It includes students who are sharing homes with other people due to loss of their own housing or other economic problem.

It also includes kids living in motels, hotels, trailer parks or campgrounds due to a lack of alternatives, the state said. Students living in shelters, abandoned buildings, bus or train stations and cars are included as well.
