Survivors of Rikers Island, directly impacted families and allies will hold a rally Thursday morning before a City Council budget meeting.
The rally comes after news broke about the delay of the construction of a jail complex in Brooklyn that is set to replace Rikers. Advocates now fear the delay would keep Rikers Island open longer.
The City Council passed a law in 2019 to permanently close Rikers by 2027 and replace it with jails in the five boroughs. Ralliers want the mayor to stick with that timeline.
They plan to gather at the Tweed courthouse steps on Chambers Street at 9 a.m.
