Ugandan, Kenyan Olympic athletes finish 1st in NYC half marathon

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Two Olympic athletes, Jacob Kiplimo, a 22-year-old Ugandan, and Hellen Obiri, a 33-year-old Kenyan, took first place for the men’s and women’s competitions at the New York City Half Marathon on Sunday.

Kiplimo, the youngest person ever to compete in the Olympics for Uganda, finished with a time of 1:01:31. Obiri set an event record at 1:07:21.

Jetze Plat, from the Netherlands, and Susannah Scaroni, from the U.S., won the wheelchair races at 48:28 and 56 minutes respectively.

About 25,000 participants kicked off the 13.1-mile race at 7 a.m. in Prospect Park.

Athletes from 15 different countries ran north along Flatbush Avenue, across the Manhattan Bridge, up FDR Drive along the East River, across 42nd Street and up toward the finish line in Central Park. You can see a full map here.

The event was organized by New York Road Runners, the same non-profit in charge of the New York City Marathon.
