Person stands on NYC train car — just weeks after teen dies subway surfing

A mind-boggling new photo shows a person standing on top of a train traveling through the Bronx — just weeks after a teenager was killed while subway surfing in Brooklyn.

The person was photographed wearing a backpack, sneakers, pants and a short-sleeve shirt as they surfed on the top of a seemingly busy No. 5 train.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority statistics show the number of subway surfers jumped a staggering 560% from January to May 2022 compared to the same period in 2021 — with 449 reported incidents last year.

There were more than 100 subway surfing instances in the first two months of 2023 alone, with 58 in January and 52 in February, records show. Just over 200 people were reported to have been “riding outside of trains” in 2021, but the number ballooned to 928 during all of 2022, according to statistics.

Just last month, a 15-year-old died while riding atop a J train as it traveled through Brooklyn’s Williamsburg Bridge, police said.  The teen died after his head slammed on the bridge around 6:45 p.m. Feb. 20, police said.

NYC Transit President Richard Davey told The Post the agency “cannot stress it enough: Riding on top of subway cars is reckless, dumb and dangerous, frequently leading to tragedy for the person involved and their loved ones.”

“We implore parents to speak with their children and teachers to talk to students about what can seem like a game but obviously is not.”
