Gouie New York Opens Sushi and Sake Spot in the Market Line

Must Read

There’s a new restaurant operating in the Market Line, the food hall below the Essex Market, and it’s a project from a culinary team that’s made a big impression in Chinatown and the East Village in the past few years. Earlier in the week, Gouie New York made its debut, offering sushi, sake and small plates.

The 15-seat bar right next to Ends Meat and across from The Pickle Guys is the latest creation of Keisuke Kasagi and Yudai Kanayama. They’re behind Izakaya on East 6th St. and Dr. Clark, the inventive hokkaido restaurant across from Columbus Park.

One of the inspirations for the new spot was Tomoe Sushi, the shuttered neighborhood restaurant on Thompson Street that served very fresh high quality sushi at reasonable prices for 40 years. At Gouie, we’re told, 8 pieces of sushi will be priced at around $30 and there will also be a number of seasonal small plates.

More from the publicity team: “Sake bartender, Ryosuke joins the team from Japanese staples like Cagen and Hi-Collar and will be serving up ‘Gouie cups’ of hot sake. This (1oz.) small cup is meant to enjoy for every one dish.”

Opening hours are Thursday through Saturday from noon to 10PM and Sunday from noon to 6PM.
