A teen from New Orleans is left fighting for her life in a Dallas hospital Thursday night after her parents and sister died in a car crash. It happened as the family was on their way to her older brother's graduation in Texas.
On Thursday, the family had finalized plans for a funeral that will be held Friday morning for the mom Shuntell Magee, 37, dad Michael Jackson, 44 and daughter, Abrielle Jackson, 16, at Charbonnet Funeral Home in Treme. The deadly crash happened on May 24.
Tyra Mitchell, the sister of Shuntell Magee, said, "They left the night before. I guess to drive through the night. They were expected to be in Dallas by 5 a.m."
Mitchell said the drive from New Orleans to Dallas is one her family had become accustomed to since she moved there following Hurricane Katrina.
This time, Mitchell's sister Shuntell, her husband, three kids and the family dog were headed out to celebrate their other son, who lived with Mitchell. He was set to graduate high school that day.
"We had a lot of plans for that day, for that weekend. I had all their shirts made with their names on them. When I woke up at 6 a.m., I realized no one was in the house. I received a call from a friend who told me to get dressed. She was on her way. There had been an accident," Mitchell said.
It was then Mitchell received the gut-wrenching news, the family had been involved in a deadly accident along I-20 as they were driving through Tyler, Texas. Her brother-in-law Michael was the driver of the vehicle. It is believed he may have overcorrected the vehicle while driving.
"Some kind of way he lost control of the vehicle. It flipped at least four times. There was nothing they could do. They tried to help them on scene," Mitchell said.
Shuntell, Michael and Abrielle all lost their lives in the crash. Abrielle was going to be a junior this year at Eleanor McMain Secondary High School.
Shuntell was about to graduate from college herself and had dreams of having her own business and owning her own home.
Her husband Mikey worked with RTA in New Orleans.
Their other daughter Samara, also a student at Eleanor McMain, was found in a ditch following the wreck. Mitchell said Samara is at Children's Hospital in Dallas, and it will be a long road to recovery.
Mitchell said, "She is unable to walk and has broken bones all over her body. Including her spine."
The remaining children left to cope with the loss of their parents and sister. Mitchell is trying to be strong for the entire family.
"Right now, I am trying to stay as strong as I can because I have children that are depending on me. I am a single woman and it is just me. It's a lot of pressure but I know it is what my sister would want me to do," Mitchell said.
The other son and dog, who were also inside the vehicle when it crashed, are both doing OK.
As for the son who was graduating in Texas that day, the family said they let him walk across the stage before breaking the terrible news about his parents and sister.
Funeral services are set for Friday at Charbonnet Funeral Home. Visitation is at 9 a.m. Services start at 10 a.m. The interment will be at Providence Memorial Park.
InspireNOLA Schools sent this statement regarding the loss of one of its students:

We ask for prayers and healing for our one student who is still in the hospital at this time." - Jamar McKneely, CEO of InspireNOLA Schools
Mitchell says she plans to start a foundation to honor the life of her niece and to support others who may experience grief in this way.
