New Orleans police make arrest in crash that damaged Rubenstein's on Canal Street
NOW NEW INFORMATION ON A STORY WE FIRST TOLD YOU ABOUT LAST NIGHT, SURVEILLANCE VIDEO SHOWS A CAR SLAMMING RIGHT INTO THE WINDOW OF REUBEN STEIN’S ON CANAL STREET. WDSU REPORTER ELIZABETH KUEBEL LIVE WITH A LOOK AT THE IMPACT OF THAT CRASH. ELIZABETH AND TRAVERS, I WANT TO TAKE YOU ALL HERE LIVE AND GIVE YOU A LOOK AT EXACTLY WHAT THIS STORE LOOKS LIKE TODAY. TAKE A LOOK RIGHT HERE AS I LET YOU KNOW THAT I AM STILL WAITING RIGHT NOW FROM SOME MORE DETAILS FROM THE NOPD ABOUT THE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT LED UP TO THIS CRASH. BUT TODAY, YOU CAN CLEARLY STILL SEE THE AFTERMATH OF IT. THE WINDOW AT RUBENSTEIN IS NOW BOARDED UP AND SIGNS REMINDING CUSTOMERS THE POPULAR MEN’S CLOTHING STORE ON CANAL STREET IS STILL OPEN AFTER THIS HAPPENED EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. CAPTURED IN SURVEILLANCE VIDEO, A DRIVER SLAMMING RIGHT INTO THE FRONT WINDOW WHEN THEY GOT TO THE CORNER FOR WHATEVER REASON, THEY LOST CONTROL AND ENDED UP HERE. THEY KNOCKED DOWN THE LIGHT POLE, BUT THEY DIDN’T HIT ANYBODY AND NOBODY GOT HURT. JUST ENDED UP AT OUR FRONT WINDOW. IT’S GOOD NEWS TO THE OWNER THAT EVERYONE IS SAFE AND NOTHING WAS STOLEN. DESPITE THIS INCIDENT AND OTHER RECENT CRIMES ALONG CANAL, THE OWNER VOWS WE’RE STAYING FOR ANOTHER 99 YEARS. ANCHORED ON THE CORNER FOR ALMOST A CENTURY NOW. IT WAS MY FATHER AND UNCLES WHEN THEY OPENED THE STORE, BUT THIS WAS THE VERY FIRST DAY WITH THE ARTIFACTS INSIDE TO PROVE ITS LEGACY. AND THIS IS THE ORIGINAL DEED FROM 1840. RUBENSTEIN ISN’T DETERRED. IN FACT, QUITE THE OPPOSITE. THEY’RE WORKING NOW TO USE AND CONVERT THE UPPER FLOORS OF THE BUILDING. WE’RE BUILDING A HOTEL HERE, WHICH IS PART OF WHAT THIS IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION. SO WE’RE GOING TO OPEN PROBABLY IN SEPTEMBER FOR A NICE LITTLE ROOM, BOUTIQUE HOTEL TO KEEP THE HISTORIC BUILDING THERE. IT IS PROOF, THEY SAY, THAT THEY LIKE EXACTLY WHERE THEY ARE. THIS IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE FOR PEOPLE WHO THINK IT’S JUST GETTING BIGGER AND BETTER AND IT IS STILL TOO EARLY FOR THIS SHOP TO TOTAL UP JUST HOW MUCH ALL OF THESE REPAIRS WILL COST. THEY DO EXPECT THESE WINDOWS RIGHT HERE TO BE FIXED UP IN THE NEXT TWO MONTHS. REPORTING LIVE ON CANAL, I’M ELIZABETH
