NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Two people were shot overnight in the French Quarter -- one fatally -- New Orleans police said Saturday (May 27).

The NOPD said a 30-year-old man -- whose identity has not been disclosed -- was shot Friday at 10:33 p.m., after a vehicle collision at the intersection of North Peters and Iberville streets. Police said he was taken for treatment by New Orleans EMS personnel but died at the hospital.

About four hours later, a 27-year-old woman was shot at the opposite corner of the French Quarter. The NOPD said she was wounded at 2:31 a.m., shortly after an argument in The Page Bar in the 500 block of North Rampart Street.

“It’s like Pandora’s Box. When you open it, you can’t close it back up and everybody has a weapon,” said The Page Bar operator Willie Mackie. “When she went outside, he took his drink and threw it in her face and then he left. There was never an exchange of fighting or anything, just words.”

According to police, after the altercation in the bar, one of the parties involved called a man carrying a backpack to the scene. He allegedly spotted the woman and “fired several shots striking the victim to the abdomen,” police said.

Mackie says the gun problem in the city is getting out of control.

“I’ve never seen gun violence. I mean, literally never,” said Mackie. “You see people with their guns, screaming and hollering, but they never used them.”

She was taken for hospital treatment by New Orleans EMS but her condition was not disclosed.
