The first block of Cambronne Street off the Mississippi River in New Orleans has long been a hotspot for loud parties, fights and, earlier this week, even gunfire, a resident said.

What was different about Friday evening's ruckus was the body, a 31-year-old man shot dead in front of a house. The resident, who asked not to be identified, said he heard at least 15 shots before the authorities arrived to investigate.

Police said they were called to Riverbend at 5:56 p.m. and found the victim in the 800 block of Cambronne. They said he was fighting with a known man when he was shot, but they did not identify the suspect or say whether they arrested anyone.

As officers worked the crime scene, a woman who identified herself as the victim's mother sobbed with about a dozen friends and relatives around her. "You killed my brother!" the victim's brother yelled into the night sky.

The Police Department did not immediately release more details on the killing. Anyone with information about it was asked to call the homicide unit at (504) 658-5300 or Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans Inc. at (504) 822-1111. Crimestoppers tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward.
