New Milford police have released the 911 call from the man they say admitted killing his mother.
Eric Meagan made the call Monday morning almost a half an hour after he said he killed his mother in a New Milford river, authorities say.
Eric Meagan, 34, was arraigned Tuesday and charged with murdering his mother Victoria Palmer. Authorities say Meagan told police he dragged his mother into the Still River and held her down in the water for about 10 minutes until she stopped moving.
They say Meagan told police he believed his mother loved him so much that she would have been willing to sacrifice herself to save him.
"Mental illness does come into play in a lot of homicide cases, and that is an aspect that we here at the police department will investigate," said New Milford Police Chief Spencer Cerruto.
Meagan is being held on a $2 million bond. Police say Meagan at one point planned to kill his entire family. They say before he killed his mother, he killed a family cat.
From the 911 call:
Dispatch: "911. What's the address of your emergency?"
Meagan: I'm at Harrybrooke Park on the river trail. My mom's dead.
Meagan: I killed her.
Dispatch: You killed her?
Meagan: Yeah, I had to. I had to do it to keep the demons away.
Dispatch: Oh, you had to do it to keep the demons away?
Meagan: Yeah.
Dispatch: How did you kill her?
Meagan: In the water.
Dispatch: You drowned her?
Meagan: Yeah.
Dispatch: You said the demons told you to do this. Are you still hearing them?
Meagan: I was feeling them.
Dispatch: You were feeling them?
Meagan: I'm not feeling them now that she's dead.
Meagan: The demons have been constantly plaguing me.
