Letter | Madison traffic enforcement lacking
Dear Editor: We continue to have regular pedestrian fatalities in the city due to a lack of sufficient enforcement of the traffic laws. The city puts in flashing yellow pedestrian stops, which half of the drivers sail through whether people are crossing or not. Both cars and bikes fly through stop signs causing near-misses daily. They’ve lowered speed limits, put in roundabouts and added a numerous bike-only lanes, but they’ve failed to step up enforcement except immediately following an incident. Some have suggested this might be due to fear of danger when stopping vehicles, which is understandable, or an attitude that traffic duty is a lowly or less exciting task. Regardless, it’s a big part of the job.
