New Kent’s Lady Trojans faced a familiar foe as they hosted the invading York Lady Falcons during the June 1 Group 3A Region A Championship game. And just like the first three encounters, the fourth went in the favor of the Lady Trojans, but not without its challenges.

After surrendering the first two runs of the game, New Kent’s Kennedy Ziglar delivered the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth that eventually became the difference maker in a 3-2 win for the home team.

York took advantage of being the first team to bat in the top of the first. A two-run double by Mackenzie Hahn provided the visitors an early 2-0 lead.

It would take New Kent four innings before they found a way to push runs across home plate. Hannah Tober’s double allowed Morgan Berg to trot home for the first Lady Trojan run. Moments later, Hannah Perkins’ connection brought Tober home, tying the game at two-apiece by the conclusion of the frame.

In the bottom of the fifth, New Kent took the lead as Ziglar’s RBI single allowed Alline Alexander to get around the bases for the go-ahead score (3-2). New Kent’s defense prevailed in the next two innings, allowing them to clinch the regional championship.

After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach Maria Bates spoke about the accomplishment.

“York came out and scored two runs, but we have played tough competition all year and faced adversity,” she said. “We have been in this spot before and we were hitting the ball and every inning. Finally in the fifth we broke it open to get the go ahead run.”

New Kent is scheduled to face Skyline High School on June 6.
