A Nelson County man has been jailed for abusing his children, including one who suffered “permanently debilitating injuries,” according to the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office.

James L. Saldana, 55, of New Haven, who has nine children — four minors and five adults — was arrested following his indictment on four counts of first-degree criminal abuse (victims under the age of 12) and first-degree assault (domestic violence).

The sheriff’s office said that during the investigation the four juvenile children were placed into foster care by the Department of Child Based Services.

Additionally, investigators discovered one of Saldana’s now adult children suffered “permanently debilitating injuries after she was assaulted by the suspect while she was a minor,” the sheriff’s office said.

Additional charges are pending.

Saldana was lodged in the Nelson County Detention Center.
