Millionth Avelo Customer Takes Off From Tweed

Fantastic! Hopefully by next year, there will be 30 destinations and the 3 millionth passenger.

Congrats to avelo. New Haven and surrounding cities have been waiting for someone to give our hometown airport the chance to show what a success it could be. The expansion of the runway and new terminal cant come fast enough. Tweed is easily a 2.5-3 million annual passenger airport in the making.

For years a few said no market existed in the New Haven area for air travel, funny but Hartford did. Avelo proved them wrong and has shown a large market exists for new flights. The majority have supported Tweed with their wallets and in June there will be 15 cities with service to New Haven.

One million customers is a very big deal given where Tweed had started about a year and half ago. I think the new larger terminal will easily be able to accommodate more flights, more airlines, and probably triple the amount of people who travels from to Tweed on a year-to-year basis.

The growth and the expansion of the airport's footprint is what will make it easier and more convenient for people who would be commuting to Tweed from an hour away.

Next goal: 5 million customers!! Go Tweed!

I think the airport is too big, back in the day it was crop dusters. Now it’s just an unsightly loud disturbance.

Do you want a good laugh? Hit one of the “tweed Tags“ above and read some of the ridiculous anti-airport predictions from many current and former commentariat. The question of whether or not Tweed can be successful has been answered. There’s clearly a demand for it. All that is left now is the argument over environmental issues.

We should all convert to clean energy, oh but airplanes are still ok. It's just jet fuel.

We do need to address noise, pollution, flooding in the area, and traffic issues associated with the airport. It would be a good idea to push the airlines to get greener. It also would be good to buy the homes at fair market value right next to the ends of the runway for low flying planes landing and taking off.
But I’m glad that Avelo has shown there is a demand for more flights out of Tweed. There are lots of snowbirds and people with family down South, in the Mid-Atlantic, the Midwest and in the Caribbean who are going to be very happy about it. We also have vacationers and Spring Break college students who would enjoy even more destinations to vacation hot spots. And as the biotech industry starts to concentrate in the area and the new neuroscience hospital gets built, the demand for business travel will grow.
The lengthening of the runway will allow for more full fuel tanks and full passengers loads with luggage. Changing the terminal to the East Haven side with more commercial streets will generate more airport related businesses to the town.
They need to have a dedicated CT Transit bus stop to match all hours that employees and passengers need service from the New Haven Green and the train stations, and eventually a train station in East Haven should be built, and a shuttle bus for high airport traffic times. This would reduce traffic and pollution. It wouldn’t hurt to have the Shoreline Greenway trail go past the airport to connect with the Farmington Canal trail so bike riders can check their bike and backpack into luggage. We have lots of area college students and young people who would find that a nice option.

More noise. Bigger runways. Larger planes. More traffic congestion. More pollution. More birdstrikes. And all in a residential area. Right next to an environmentally fragile marsh. Why not in the middle of nowhere? Oh that’s right bc Yale SOM runs New Haven - I forgot. No economic upside btw - all profits sent to Goldman Sachs New York. Now back to your regularly scheduled program of NIMBY Tweed cheerleading….

@Callisto, "More noise. Bigger runways. Larger planes." How did you come up with the "Larger planes" comment? The next step up would be wide body jets, 767, 777, 787, A330, A350, etc. You and the few offer made up facts, wide body planes are not used at Bradley, they will never fly at Tweed. Most of the commenters favor an upgraded airport and some who were opposed are using the new flights. The same type of doom and gloom was spouted when United came to Tweed and stayed for almost 5 years. no mass destruction, no poisoning of creeks, no large scale killing of wildlife which by the way most animals are killed on highways like I-95 and I-91. Channel your efforts that help people in your local area that will make a difference, not this calamity howling meant to frighten people with fairy tales.

Steve, noise pollution is pollution and has real health impacts. More flights equals more noise. And the increased service to Tweed has had real environmental costs beyond noise. Every time a plane lands or takes off, it generates particulate matter (soot) which contributes to a variety of respiratory diseases.

At the same time, the expanded service has had real economic benefits. Time has value, even for those of us with no Yale affiliations. People are flying out of Tweed in large part because it is quicker and easier than going to Bradley or the NYC airports.

Going forward, the challenge will be minimizing the airport's environmental harm while maximizing its economic benefit.

@Kevin McCarthy, I appreciate your open mindedness and seeing both sides of the issue. Some seem to forget or not know the make up of planes at Tweed. There are many private aircraft that fly in and out of Tweed and many are older models that are noisy and not as clean burning as newer models. I remember back when Eastern and Allegheny flew 727's, DC-9's and BAC-1-11, the noisiest airliner I ever heard and all 3 would leave a smoke trail. These airliners were classified as stage 2 airliners, and are not used anymore. Not so with the 737 Next Gen planes Avelo flies, they are stage 4 noise complaint and are quieter than the 737's United flew years ago. Also the noise time window is very short, takeoffs 30-40 seconds, landing noise time window 50-70 seconds and with the runway being lengthened, planes will have more runway to land on and not require as much engine reverse thrust to slow down and takeoffs to the north will fly over homes at a higher altitude.
Just the huge increase in passengers shows area travelers like the service, more jobs have been created and Tweed will never become a large operation such as Bradley, Providence and the White Plains airport as Its size and market are limited. Area residents survived the era of United, Usair, Continental and smaller airlines back in the 90's with no lasting damage. Just a few facts regarding airliners of yesterday and today.
