Man, child dead after apparent murder-suicide in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the death of a man and his son in New Bedford Friday.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III said the incident appears to be a murder-suicide. It is believed that the man, 53-year-old George Scott III, killed 8-year-old Dante Hazard with a sharp object before taking his own life.

Their deaths are believed to be connected to the disappearance of a Fall River woman back in 2019, according to Quinn.

The missing woman, Lisa Hazard, is Dante’s mother, and Quinn said Scott was a person of interest in her disappearance.

“There’s been a lot of work put into this case, again, since 2019, investigating her disappearance,” he said. “Her body has not been located.”

Detectives searched Scott’s Phillips Road home last month as part of the ongoing investigation. Officers returned to the home Friday morning for a well-being check, according to Quinn, after a relative couldn’t get ahold of Scott.

Quinn said Scott is the son of Boston Red Sox great George “Boomer” Scott.
