As we head into the week, let's take a look at the news from this past week.

Vineyard Wind's first turbine has arrived in New Bedford. The UHL Felicity heavy load carrier will become a familiar site in New Bedford as it makes repeated trips from Portugal to deliver parts of Vineyard Wind’s offshore wind turbines to the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal. The turbine blades will start arriving in mid-June. 

The pair of piping plovers have returned to New Bedford’s East Beach and are getting ready to hatch some eggs. An endangered species, New Bedford Conservation Agent Chance Perks watches over the plovers with help from two paid Massachusetts Audubon Society monitors under contract with the city and with the help of neighborhood volunteers. The area of East Beach where the birds are under surveillance has been closed to the public to give them space.

The same black bear believed to be the one spotted in Taunton, Freetown, Fall River and Dartmouth, was in New Bedford's far North End Tuesday, as Mass. Environmental Police guided it into the nearby woods at a dead end on Philips Road.

A black bear has been spotted in Dartmouth

The resident SouthCoast black bear has surely been causing a stir making appearances all over the area.

A Dartmouth police social media post from 10:05 a.m. Monday includes a picture of what appears to be a black bear, reportedly from a home surveillance system in the area of Collins Corner Road.

 Massachusetts Environmental Police were in New Bedford on Tuesday trying to convince a black bear — believed to be a two-year-old male — to make its way into the woods in the city's far North End.

After a long morning hunting for bird feeders through backyards in New Bedford's North End on Tuesday, SouthCoast's apparent resident black bear reemerged through the woods in the town of Acushnet just after noontime before popping up yet again in Marion on Wednesday.

New Bedford Port Authority weighs in on fisheries mitigation for offshore wind

Fishermen repair the dredges aboard the Daddy's Girl scalloper docked in New Bedford.

As offshore wind companies seek permits for new projects, officials in New Bedford are weighing in on the impact on the fishing industry. 

New Bedford Port Authority Executive Director Gordon Carr is calling for SouthCoast Wind to follow Vineyard Wind’s lead in support of local fisheries programs and projects. Vineyard Wind is closing in on construction of its wind farm. 

The DEIS states that Mayflower Wind would implement a compensation program for lost income for commercial and recreational fishing interests during construction and for a minimum of five years post-construction.

New Bedford featured as question again on 'Jeopardy!'

That is, "What's New Bedford?" was the answer to a "Jeopardy! Masters" question highlighting the Whaling City's national park on Wednesday night.

During ABC's final night of "Jeopardy! Masters" hosted by Ken Jennings, an answer during double jeopardy for $400 read, "A historical park devoted to the whaling industry in this Massachusetts city features a museum & then Schooner Ernestina" was correctly questioned by Matt Amodio.

Movie filmed at Fairhaven High School and Wamsutta Club announces release date

Paul Giammati's New Bedford-Fairhaven filmed movie "The Holdovers" to premiere November 10.

Featuring scenes at Fairhaven High School and the Wamsutta Club, the upcoming Paul Giamatti film "The Holdovers" sets to release in November 2023.

In February 2021, actor Giamatti and director Alexander Payne reunited, since collaborating on the 2004 film "Sideways," to start filming "The Holdovers" in the New England area.

According to a press release by Focus Features, the film is officially heading to theaters this fall, and will open in limited release on November 10.
