A majority of high schools around the valley have a 7 a.m. start time, leading the question, is that too early for students?
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends schools start no earlier than 8:30 in the morning.
The Nevada State Board of Education held a public workshop in Carson City on Thursday to get the conversation started.
The board president supports the initiative, saying she often sees students half asleep or still visibly tired during the first few hours of the school day.
"Common sense and research would say that you should start later, right," said president of The Nevada State Board of Education, Felicia Oritz. Because it's proven to improve student outcomes, however, most of our decisions are being made based on adult priorities or needs."
The second meeting will be held in Las Vegas on April 15 at Desert Pines High School at 9 a.m.
