Locked up from Bell-to-Bell

Walking in the halls of Millennium Brooklyn High School is a lot different this year than it was in years past. Gone are the days of MBHS students using their passing period to keep up with their Instagram feed, text their friends, or check their digital schedule. Students now keep their phones tucked away, track down their friends in the halls, and unfold their ripped, crumpled, and disintegrating paper schedules to find their next class. Why the difference? NYC 3-K And Pre-K Applications Are Now Open — Here Is Everything Parents Need To Know To Secure Guaranteed Acceptance For Little Learners

In New York City , milestones come in all shapes and sizes—and for 3- and 4-year-olds, they sometimes happen on a subway platform . City kids can tap an OMNY card before they can tie their shoes , pronounce dinosaur names that stump adults thanks to afternoons (or sleepovers ) spent at the Museum of Natural History , and navigate a crowded sidewalk like seasoned pros. As these tiny New Yorkers grow more independent , one big milestone looms large for families: their little learners starting school. Last week, Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced major new investments in early childhood education —expanding free child care for 2-year-olds and moving New York City closer to universal 3-K and Pre-K , with a focus on easing costs for families and widening access where it’s needed most. For parents of soon-to-be 3- and 4-year-olds, the next big step is official: applications for the 2026–27 school year are open. Whether you’re clicking through online , calling it in, or stopping by a Family Welcome Center , enrolling your little New Yorker is just a few taps (or a stroller walk) away. For more information and to apply online , visit the

New York teachers stunned to learn some students can’t read time on old clocks after phone ban comes into play

New York City teachers say the state’s recently implemented cell phone ban in schools has showed that numerous students no longer know how to tell time on an old-fashioned clock. “That's a major skill that they're not used to at all,” Tiana Millen, an assistant principal at Cardozo High School in Queens, told Gothamist of what she’s noticed after the ban , which went into effect in September. Students in the city’s school system are meant to learn basic time-telling skills in the first and second grade, according to officials, though it appears children have fallen out of practice doing so in an increasingly digital world . “The constant refrain is ‘Miss, what time is it?’ Madi Mornhinweg, an English teacher in Manhattan , added in an interview with the outlet. “It’s a source of frustration because everyone wants to know how many minutes are left in class. … It finally got to the point where we I started saying ‘Where’s the big hand and where’s the little hand?’” Students and teachers alike say they’ve seen a drastic change in school culture since the phone ban, supported by Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York City teacher’s union, went into

Manhattan superintendent Kamar Samuels is set to be named by Zohran Mamdani as his next schools chancellor. District3Supt/ X During his six-year stint as superintendent, Samuels promoted racial diversity in the classroom via school mergers in the district that covers parts of Harlem, the Upper West Side and Morningside Heights, according to Chalkbeat . He also focused on chipping away at the controversial Gifted & Talented program, which teachers’ unions claim is racially biased . Samuels instead opted to use the International Baccalaureate Organization, which he found “aligned with [his] philosophy” of expanding opportunities for all students while also investing in teachers.
