NELSONVILLE — Factory Street Studio will hold its 45th annual spring dance concert Friday and Saturday at Stuart’s Opera House, 52 Public Square, Nelsonville.

The Spring Dance Concert will begin at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $10 for children and $20 for adults ages 18 and over. They will be available in-person before each concert.

The Spring Dance Concert is an annual event that allows students of the Factory Street Studio to showcase the work they have learned and the progression they have made over the spring semester. The students will showcase teacher-choreographed works, their improvisational skills, and class combinations that were all taught, learned, and rehearsed throughout their semester with FSS.

FSS is a non-profit dance studio founded in 1978, the studio prides itself on providing non-competitive dance education in southeast counties of Appalachian Ohio, enhancing dance technique, self-esteem, personal growth and cooperative spirit. Factory Street is also one of the only non-competition studios in Ohio that emphasizes modern dance and the creative process when teaching their students. FSS classes are taught from a physiologically sound basis, meaning that their students are learning and understanding concepts, principles, and mechanisms rooted in the fundamental workings of the human body allowing them to create smooth and elegant movements.

On the FSS website, they state that “our dancers have a long dance-life expectancy, whether performing or observing.”

The FSS curriculum is founded on a 14-week, methods-based program. Each week students are taught different dance concepts such as space, time, energy and shape. According to the website, FSS teachers take inspiration from Bartenieff Fundamentals and Rudolph Laban’s movement effort systems, which help them to plan their weekly lessons for the students by incorporating these concepts into the genre-specific structure for those techniques.

In a press release written about the 45th Annual Spring Dance Concert, FSS says, “We are very grateful to be providing this rare opportunity for young dancers.”
