NASHVILLE, Tenn. — One current and one former member of the Vanderbilt men’s golf program will be playing in the 2023 U.S. Open after Gordon Sargent and Luke List survived 36 holes of qualifying for the event on Monday.
The two will now tee it up at the Los Angeles Country Club June 15-18.
Sargent was one of three qualifiers in a field of 43 competing at Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground, Georgia. The sophomore from Birmingham, Alabama, fired a 9-under-par 64 in the morning and followed up with a 67 in the second round to win the site by two strokes with a 13-under-par 131 36-hole total. He will be making his second appearance at a major during the PGA Tour’s 2022-23 season after competing at The Masters Tournament in April.
List recorded scores of 67 and 68 for a two-round 9-under-par 135 total to tie for third among the 103 competitors at the Brookside Golf & Country Club and the Lakes Golf & Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. A four-time All-American for the Commodores from 2003-06, he will be playing in a major for the first time since making the field at the 2022 Open Championship.
Former Dore Harrison Ott is one of two alternates from the Columbus site after he shot a 7-under-par 137 highlighted by a 66 in the first round. Current senior Matthew Riedel also fired a 66 in the morning in Ball Ground on the way to an 8-under-par 136 36-hole score, while former Vandy All-American John Augenstein—coming off a career-best third-place finish on the Korn Ferry Tour last weekend—posted a 7-under-par 137 total at the Old Chatham Club in Durham, North Carolina, after shooting a 67 in the second round.
Patrick Martin, a three-time All-American at Vanderbilt, finished with a 1-under-par 143 score in Columbus following an opening-round 67, with current Commodores Jackson Van Paris (2-under-par 142) and Cole Sherwood (147, including a 69 in the morning) also competing in qualifiers in Durham and Columbus, respectively.
