NASHVILLE, Tenn.--A former classmate of the Nashville school mass shooter who is also a teacher says she is "angry that she [shooter] would do something so evil and hurtful."
Samira Hardcastle is a former classmate of shooter Audrey Hale, a 28-year-old who targeted The Covenant School, killing three children and three staff members.
Hardcastle says she had no idea what was taking place on Monday since she was with her students and it wasn't until her grandfather texted her 'I need to know you're ok.' Hardcastle says it was then that she learned there was a shooting but it wasn't until the end of the day that she realized she knew the shooter.
"I just sat at my desk for like 45 minutes after school just trying to process that I know her. It was just unfathomable, I couldn't do it, it was hard" Hardcastle says. "It was just a lot of pressure and a lot of emotions coming from different points of view."
Hardcastle says she had just met with Hale last month and there were no signs anything was wrong. Hardcastle says they didn't have an in-depth talk but didn't observe anything out of the normal and seemed like her normal self. Looking at the footage, Hardcastle says "I felt angry that she would do something so evil and hurtful to people who didn't deserve to die."
Of the texts Hale sent to another former classmate, Hardcastle says "it was selfish and unfair for her to do that and then she put all of the burden and the responsibility on another former classmate that didn't deserve that either." Hardcastle says she and others who knew Hale "haven't made sense of it." "There's been no sense making," Hardcastle says. "Its been all of these emotions. Some people are angry, some people are mad, some are like sad, confused. There's no words right now, its just heavy."
