The MNPD said a group of officers rushed into the school to respond to the scene and evacuate the building when they encountered Hale in a common area on the second floor and the two officers began firing. Police said Hale started shooting at arriving police cars through a window.

Hale, 28, killed three children and three adults during the rampage, which police said the shooter previously attended. The victims were identified as Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney, all age 9, along with Cynthia Peak, 61, Katherine Koonce, 60, and Mike Hill, 61.

Hale shot out the windows of an exterior door to enter the school and was armed with two assault-type guns along with a 9 mm pistol, according to law enforcement.

Surveillance footage released showed Hale entering the school by shooting through some doors, then opening some doors and entering for a time. Every time Hale enters a room, Hale appears ready to open fire, but no violence is shown on the released tapes. The video continues to show Hale walking through hallways with weapons clearly visible.

Hale is seen wearing a backward red hat, camouflage pants, and a white shirt, along with a tactical vest holding the weapons.

Police revealed Monday that Hale was transgender, being a biological woman but identifying as a man. Officials also said Hale lived in the Nashville area.

MNPD Chief John Drake said on Monday that law enforcement had searched Hale’s home and found maps of the school that included entry points along with a manifesto relating to the shooting. Officers have not revealed a clear motive but added they have a working theory, which they have elected not to release at this time.

The shooter had another target, according to police, but did not opt to go to the second location due to security reasons.
