Is Nashville giving the Titans a sweetheart stadium deal?

Good morning, and welcome to your Daily Briefing! This is Tennessean business editor Nicole Young.

After more than a year of negotiations between Metro Nashville and the Tennessee Titans, it's almost time for the council to vote on whether to proceed with a new stadium.

This, of course, begs the question: Are the Titans getting a sweetheart deal? And, more to the point, are Davidson County residents getting a fair shake?

Business reporter Sandy Mazza dives into the deal with those questions in mind.

The Tennessee Titans released renderings of the potential new stadium Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2022. The stadium would encompass 1.7 million square feet with a capacity of about 60,000 people.

"Titans officials said they have three major goals: to find a better stadium-lease agreement for the city, build sustainable funding sources and construct a community destination that can host a variety of events, expanding the area's tax base and enhancing its culture," Mazza writes

"The team would work in tandem with Metro Sports Authority to manage the stadium, according to proposed contracts recently released."

Community-action group Stand Up Nashville has spoken publicly in opposition to the deal, saying the city should stop constantly "spending public tax dollars in a way that only serves a few rich people."

Mazza took a close look at all the stadium financing paperwork to outline the finer points of the deal. But, ultimately, it's up to you, the reader, to decide if Nashville or The Titans have secured that sweetheart deal. No pressure!!
