NASHVILLE, Tenn.--An Iraq war veteran who has survived both being severely wounded in action and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma will receive a new home in honor of his service.
Charitable organization Freedom Alliance, U.S. Bank, and home builder Ole South teamed up to give the gift of a mortgage-free home to U.S. Army Sergeant Xanthin Luptak in Shelbyville.
In a media release announcing the gift, Sgt. Luptak is described as a war veteran who began his service with the Indiana National Guard at age 17. Sgt. Luptak later served a 15 month deployment to Iraq in 2007 where he served as a combat engineer, clearing routes of hidden bombs to protect his fellow troops.
In 2011, Sgt. Luptak helped to train Afghan police on clearance operations and survived repeated engagements with enemy forces leaving him severely wounded. While also overseas, he was exposed to toxins from burn pits which was discovered prior to surgery from his injuries.
Sgt. Luptak is in remission and his sacrifices are being honored on Wednesday when he and his family will be awarded the home.
