Police say a West Nashville resident, Cynthia Warner, saw a fire burning in front of her home late last week. Afterwards, she found her fence damaged and flags destroyed.
In front of Warner's home, and lined along a white picket fence hung LGBTQ+, pro-choice, Ukraine, and Black Lives Matter flags. They were burned down before 11 p.m. Wednesday night, according to police.
A nearby neighbor who wishes to remain anonymous says those flags meant a lot to Warner and the community.
"I'm dumbfounded someone came and did that to her," he says.
It’s infuriating. Her flags were something special in the neighborhood and you’d see them flip over sometimes, you’d see people walk up and flip them back over for her.
Warner's neighbor says the anger stemming from these crimes is misguided, serving as a step in the wrong direction.
I know there’s a lot of division in the world right now. However, these types of acts won’t accomplish anything except enrage and divide even more.
Brian Sullivan with the TN Equality Project calls on people to put an end to the violence.
"There have been acts of violence in our community, all throughout," he says.
So I think all of us know that it is a risk when we put ourselves out there, when we're out and when we're proud.
Sullivan believes recent legislation at the state level is to blame for the targeted acts. Police say Warner wants to press charges against those involved in the case, but so far, no arrests have been made.
And currently, nearby neighbors say they don't have any surveillance video to provide to investigators.
