Metro Police are searching for the people that painted racist graffiti on homes in the Sylvan Park neighborhood over the weekend.
A handful of neighbors woke up Sunday to find swastikas, racial slurs, and “white power” spray painted on their homes.
Violated, in a way, and disgusted,” neighbor Kristin Braaksma said.
Surveillance video shows someone spray painting her Ring doorbell camera and taking down her Ukrainian flag.
Neighbors spent Sunday afternoon scrubbing away the hateful messaging.
It’s just sad that this sentiment is still alive and kicking today,” Braaksma said.
Sunday’s vandalism is at least the third time in eight months antisemitic messaging has been reported in Nashville.
In August, at least 40 neighbors in West End found antisemitic flyers at their homes. Similar flyers circulated in East Nashville just last month.
It is getting worse and it is distressing,” Barbara Dab with the Jewish Federation of Greater Nashville said.
Dab says the Jewish Community is seeing an uptick in antisemitism in Nashville and nationally.
The Anti-Defamation League reports a record number of antisemitic incidents in 2021, with more than 2,700 reported across the country.
It is escalating, it appears the people doing this are becoming bolder because there’s not enough of an outcry, we believe, from leadership in this state,” Dab said.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Nashville is calling on leaders like Governor Bill Lee to denounce these acts.
They’re also advocating for more education surrounding antisemitism.
Governor Bill Lee issued this statement on the hate graffiti:
The Governor strongly condemns anti-Semitism, white supremacy and hate of any kind. We understand local law enforcement is investigating and reiterate that acts of hate have no place anywhere and will not be tolerated in the state of Tennessee.
Dab says the Jewish community has increased security at their synagogues, schools and office buildings in response to the rise in hate they've experienced.
