NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - An infant formula manufacturer is recalling more than 145,000 cans of plant-based formula that was possibly cross contaminated with a deadly bacteria, according to the FDA.

Reckitt said it is voluntarily recalling some of its infant formula after a factory tested positive for Cronobacter sakazakii, the same bacteria that caused the nationwide formula recall and shortage last year.

The two batches of ProSobee 12.9 oz Simply Plant-Based Infant Formula that could have come into contact with the bacteria were manufactured between August 2022 and September 2022. The products were distributed through retail stores nationwide in the U.S., Guam, and Puerto Rico.

Davidson County WIC Director Lauren Cromer said this recall should not have a major impact on the formula supply because this product is soy-based and most formulas Nashville babies eat are from cow milk.

“We know that with infant formula we can’t mess around with a potential contamination, so I do anticipate to get quite a few calls just out of concern,” Cromer said. “We have very few families here, out of our WIC families, that are on this particular formula. What we don’t know is how long ago these were available in the store.”

Cromer said formula supplies just got back to normal after last year’s shortage, and there are still issues getting some specially based formulas. WIC is reaching out to families to make sure they know to return any of the recalled formulas for a full refund, and they are also available to answer any questions other mothers might have about the recall.

The batches in question can be identified by the number on the bottom of the can. Recalled product batches are ZL2HZF and ZL2HZZ, both with a UPC Code of 300871214415, and a “Use By Date” of “1 Mar 2024.”

No other ProSobee Simply Plant-Based Infant Formula batches or other Reckitt products are impacted, Reckitt said. The recall is a precautionary measure.

No illnesses or adverse events have been reported. The FDA said it is also working on steps to test for this bacteria in the future to prevent another large-scale recall.
