Nashville falls to Columbia at SIU 2A Supersectional

CARBONDALE — The Nashville Hornets came up just short of a trip to Peoria for the 2A Baseball State semifinals, falling to Columbia 4-1 at the SIU Supersectional.

The Hornets had seven hits and received three walks, but could not get come up with the big hits against Columbia junior Brady Mathews, who went the distance with the help of his defense. The Eagles turned three double plays on the day, including one to end the game.

Nashville did take a 1-0 lead in the third on Trey Reinberg’s RBI single to score Isaac Blazier, but Columbia answered quickly with four tallies in the bottom of the inning.

Brody Landraf’s two-run, opposite field double put the Eagles up 2-1. Tyler Rosencrans followed with a triple to score Landgraf, and Rosencrans later scored on an infield hit.

Kaden Linkey came on a threw three shutout innings of relief for the Hornets to keep it a three-run game, but the Hornets were unable to capitalize.

Nashville finishes the season 30-7. Columbia (33-4) will now head to Peoria to face DePaul College Prep Friday at 3:00 in the first 2A semifinal.
