Big innings spark Napoleon to sweep
MANCHESTER – The Napoleon softball team got a five-run inning in the first game and another five-run inning in the second in a doubleheader sweep of Manchester on Monday, winning 14-10 and 10-4. In Game 1, the five-run fifth by the Pirates answered a five-run bottom of the fourth by Manchester. The Flying Dutchmen had taken a 7-6 lead before Napoleon immediately jumped back in front, and stayed there.

JACKSON -- Friday’s Ralph Rice Invitational at Western provided a comprehensive re-write to several events in this week’s Jackson-area leaderboard. Starting in the 100, you Hanover-Horton’s Graham Gumper put up his 11.11 to take the second spot behind Jackson’s Kyson Cooper. In the 200 where Michigan Center’s Travis Collins jumped into the top five. Three of the top five times in the 400 were also set at Western thanks to Collins, Northwest’s Hudson Cooper and Jonesville’s Nicholas Fowler. Western’s Ryan Good just missed a top-five time on his home track with a 53.13.

Anonymous $150K donation helps bring artificial turf to Western High football field
JACKSON COUNTY, MI -- Athletes at a Jackson County high school will get a new-and-improved football field thanks to community efforts that include an anonymous donor. The football field at Western High School will soon be refurbished with synthetic turf that’s replacing the current natural grass. Construction is set to begin by the end of May, with the new field being ready for use by the upcoming fall semester, Superintendent Mike Smajda said.

JACKSON -- One of the biggest splashes in this week’s girls track leaderboard is coming from Grass Lake’s Grace Bullock. She is on a three-meet winning streak in the 200, where she has dropped her season-best time from a 28.44 to a 27.07. She also has put up a 1:02.29 in the 400 and is a part of the Warriors’ 4x200 and 4x400 relays.
