Risen from the ashes: 20 years since a Maine church burned
STANDISH, Maine — Wednesday marks 20 years since a historic church in Standish was destroyed by fire. On the evening of Saturday, May 15, 2004, lightning struck the bell tower of the Standish Congregational Church on Oak Hill Road, sparking a fire that ultimately destroyed the 150-year-old church. Investigators believed the fire went unnoticed for nearly an hour after the strike.
PFAS testing at Sebago Lake show levels below new federal limits
STANDISH, Maine — One of the largest sources of drinking water in Maine is already testing below the new federal requirement for toxic chemicals. In April, the Environmental Protection Agency announced the first-ever national drinking water standards to protect people from PFAS pollution. Exposure to PFAS has been linked to deadly cancers, impacts to the liver and heart, and immune and developmental damage to infants and children.
Deadline has arrived for small business pandemic relief grants
PORTLAND, Maine — A total of $175,000 in pandemic relief funding is available to small businesses that suffered negative economic impacts due to COVID-19. "That could be projects that haven't gotten off the ground, contractors that you were working with that weren't able to complete work, and any thing that has impacted your businesses' ability to maintain or gain revenue," Nathan Davis, director of programs at Gateway Community Services of Maine, said.
