What's the story behind the "Tina" musical

Written by Pulitzer Prize winner Katori Hall and directed by Phyllida Lloyd, "Tina" covers Turner's life story beginning with her humble beginnings in Nutbush, Tennessee. The musical's world première was in London's Aldwych Theatre in spring 2018 and opened on Broadway in November 2019.

Is 'Tina' worth seeing?

In a 2022 review, Cape Cod Times theater journalist Kathi Scrizzi Driscoll referred to "Tina" as a "jukebox musical" that packs in two dozen songs, including ones when Turner began her career with abusive husband Ike Turner.

The reviewer also said Naomi Rodgers ― who plays Turner (and in a role she alternated with Zurin Villanueva that night) and is expected to in the 2024 tour ― "presented a dazzling, fiery portrayal of the iconic performer, both in Rodgers' nuanced acting of multiple ages and particularly in her high-powered singing and dancing. You can’t take your eyes off her."
