MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A six-year-old boy from North Carolina continues to recover three years after his family claims he got chemical burns from a resort pool in Myrtle Beach.
The boy’s family is suing the Caribbean Resort and Spa alleging a former employee admitted to forging chlorine and chemical test records.
The boy spent a week in a burn center and had surgeries.
“If you’re in water that has that much chlorine and it’s this invisible danger, chlorine burns,” the family’s attorney, Kenneth Berger, told ABC affiliate WPDE. “I mean, that’s what chlorine is designed to do. It burns away bacteria and that’s great. It just can’t be higher than a certain ceiling. You can’t go off the chart or else people get burned.”
South Carolina law says a resort’s chlorine level cannot be over an 8 on the test strip.
DHEC’s test days after the boy was burned showed chlorine levels at 10.
