Paint Canyon 'maroon' for WT Homecoming
It's time to paint the businesses around Canyon 'maroon and white' and support West Texas A&M University for its annual Homecoming celebration. Homecoming festivities and alumni events kick off next week around Canyon, Amarillo and the WT campus. Thousands of WT alums and current students, as well as Buff fans are expected to gather in Canyon for the yearly celebration that showcases 'maroon madness' on the NCAA Division II campus. According to a WT press release from Chip Chandler, a student-led tradition will return for the first time in five years during WT's Homecoming Week celebrations. The WT Student Government Association will light the Eternal Flame at the conclusion of the 46th annual Pigskin Revue, a longstanding Homecoming tradition that will move this year to Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium on WT's campus.
Local golf scramble honors the late Ted Giddens
The first annual Ted Giddens Memorial Golf Scramble will take place on Friday at Palo Duro Creek Golf Course in Canyon. Tee time is set for 1 p.m. and the scramble will honor the life of Canyon's long-time resident and former high school football coach. "Our fight against dementia continues," said Tristi Weston, the daughter of Ted Giddens. "Our goal is to assist families that have been deeply and devastatingly impacted by dementia." Giddens was the Canyon High School head football coach from 1986 to 1995. After coaching, Giddens helped start the new Alternative Education Program for Canyon ISD and then served as Lakeview Elementary School Assistant Principal until he retired in 2001.
West Plains, Argyle Liberty Christian battle in Canyon
It’s not every day that a former Dallas Cowboys legend visits Happy State Bank Stadium. On Friday, Jason Witten and the TAPPS Division II defending state champion Argyle Liberty Christian Warriors will challenge the West Plains Wolves in a Texas Panhandle marquee matchup in Canyon. “We think it’s neat but at the end of the day, it’s just a non-district football game that’s getting us prepared for district and beyond,” West Plains head football coach Adam Cummings said. West Plains (2-2) and Argyle Liberty Christian (3-1) will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday night at Happy State Bank Stadium. For ticket information, contact the Canyon ISD Athletic Office at (806) 677-2600.
WT plans to unveil bronze statue of Dr. Paul Engler
A permanent testament to the impact of Dr. Paul Engler, the larger-than-life cattleman and philanthropist, soon will be unveiled at West Texas A&M University. An 800-pound bronze statue of Dr. Paul Engler will be under wraps until 10 a.m. Oct. 11, when the sculpture will be revealed in front of WT’s Happy State Bank Academic & Research Building on Russell Long Boulevard. The ceremony is part of Homecoming Week festivities. “WT is committed to the people and industries who produce the food, fuel, and fiber for which west Texas is known for and on which the nation depends,” WT President Walter V. Wendler said. “Dr. Paul Engler was a pioneer in the cattle feeding business. His legacy supports WT’s mission to pay attention to the issues and opportunities of our region which are important to students, families, and communities across the Panhandle region, and from here the world.” Sculpted by David Anderson and Pat Kennedy, the sculpture has been in the works since spring 2023. A model was scanned in May 2023, and a half-size clay maquette was completed later that summer. Engler approved the sculpture personally before his death in May 2024 at age 94.
Randall takes down West Plains in 4-4A volleyball
AMARILLO - Randall needed a strong showing Saturday afternoon to get back in the thick of the District 4-4A volleyball race. After a 3-0 sweep at Canyon early last week, the Lady Raiders responded with a much better outing Saturday in a 3-1 (25-13, 19-25, 25-17, 25-15) win over Canyon ISD rival West Plains at the House of Doom. The win over West Plains moved Randall into second place in District 4-4A with a 19-12 overall record and a 4-1 mark in district. West Plains fell to 19-11 overall and 4-1 in district. Randall relied heavily on senior outside hitter Brooke Henderson to carry the load Saturday for the Lady Raiders' offense. Henderson did more than her share, accruing 19 digs and 14 kills for the double-double. She also finished the match with five service aces.
Western Oregon upends Buffs, 24-16
MONMOUTH, ORE. - So close, yet the West Texas A&M Buffs suffered their fourth-straight loss at the hands of Western Oregon. Saturday afternoon before 1,457 fans at McArthur Field, Western Oregon held on to defeat the Buffs, 24-16 in Lone Star Conference play. The loss to Western Oregon dropped the Buffs to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in LSC play. Western Oregon improved to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the LSC. Western Oregon took a commanding 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter, before WT got on the scoreboard.
Eagles soar to 4-1 with Homecoming victory
Canyon head coach Todd Winfrey would probably agree that Friday’s non-district battle with Farmington (N.M.) Piedra Vista was a ‘tale of two halves.’ Piedra Vista went neck-and-neck with Canyon for 24 minutes, before the Eagles pulled away with a strong second half to get the 44-30 victory on Homecoming at Happy State Bank Stadium. The win over Piedra Vista moved Canyon to 4-1 on the season going into the bye week. Piedra Vista dropped to 1-4 with the loss. “We knew coming in when you play a team (Piedra Vista) like this that runs the midline and the veer … that midline follow. The way they do it, they run it so good and so fast. It’s so hard for your defensive line and linebackers to know what it’s going to look like because your attack team and JV just can’t reproduce that in practice,” Winfrey said.
