The board voted 3-2 yesterday morning to close Anniston Middle School at the end of the 1999-2000 school year and move students in grades 6, 7 and 8 to the elementary school campuses. The plan, which will have to be approved by a federal judge, also calls for construction of new classrooms at those elementary schools, the sale of Anniston Middle School, and the renovation of Anniston High School. “Today’s vote was simply to solidify a direction,” said Superintendent Jan Hurd. Also this date: A major restructuring of Southwire Company will not adversely affect the company’s plant in Heflin, which employs about 200. However, schools in Cleburne County will take a financial hit. That’s because the wire and cable manufacturing company has decided to temporarily suspend its “charitable giving” program, which has provided thousands of dollars for education in the rural county over the years, said company spokesman Mallard Holliday.
