Birmingham man killed in head-on collision with tractor-trailer
A Birmingham man was killed Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle wreck on U.S. 231 in St. Clair County. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) says 55-year-old James H Wilson III was driving a 2021 Dodge ProMaster van that collided head-on with a 2024 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by 58-year-old Brian L Regner of Anniston.

Look Back ... to the passing of a Penney's man, 1999
June 5, 1949, in The Star: Attorneys who charged that a young South Carolina man was lured from his wife’s side in the dead of night and then forcibly brought to Anniston to face a charge which grew out of a 1948 recorder’s court conviction, has won his unconditional release from city jail at a hearing on a writ of habeas corpus. Probate Judge G. Clyde Brittain ruled in favor of the petitioner, Otto H. White, 24, of Walhalla, S.C., and ordered his release. Apparently two agents of a local bonding firm carried out the operation that essentially amounted to kidnapping, as White was forcibly caused to come to Alabama without extradition proceedings.

June 6, 1949, in The Star: A young Anniston golfer was in fair condition this morning at Anniston Memorial Hospital after being struck by lightning yesterday afternoon at the Anniston Country Club golf course. Witnesses to the strike say that Claude Kitchin III owes his life to the fact that he was lying down on the ground when the bolt struck. He was also covered by a raincoat. Kitchin, the son of Mrs. Michael Hudson of the Lagarde Apartments, was struck approximately 3:20 p.m. while playing golf with four other people: Wilfred Galbraith, J. H. Smith, Peck Leslie and Howard Weathers. Kitchin is an employee of Hudson’s department store.
Chief Ladiga Trail extension progressing as planned
ANNISTON, Ala. (WBRC) - The City of Anniston broke ground to extend the Chief Ladiga Trail close to seven miles. This new extension will connect Anniston’s Amtrak Station to Georgia’s Silver Comet Trail, forming the longest paved pedestrian pathway that will cover over 105 miles of paved trail.
