Heartland Flyer will continue Oklahoma, Texas service into 2027

The only passenger rail connection in Oklahoma will survive for at least another year thanks to officials in Texas. In a presentation to the Regional Transportation Council of the North Central Texas Council of Governments, Transportation Director Michael Morris brought "good news." The good news, he said, is that Amtrak's Heartland Flyer route between Oklahoma City and Ft. Worth will continue in 2027. Additionally, the Texas Department of Transportation has formally requested an additional two years of funding from the Texas Legislature. "Citizens have come before you during the open microphone, pleading for the Heartland Flyer to be continued," Morris said. "The Heartland Flyer will continue, given the support TxDOT now has for that particular project." The Heartland Flyer is a daily train connecting Oklahoma City to Fort Worth, Texas, passing through cities including Norman, Purcell, Pauls Valley, Ardmore and Gainesville. The train was previously scheduled to cease operations through late 2026. Previously, Oklahoma's legislature only provided enough funding to keep the line open through 2026. The Heartland Flyer saw roughly 80,876 riders during the 2025 fiscal year, which is about a 0.6% increase from the previous fiscal year. Pain at the pump grows in Oklahoma
