Muncy, Pa. — An inmate at SCI Muncy bit a staff member when she started fighting staff, police say.

Shyanne Autumn Place, 25, of Muncy "became irate" on March 5 when she was being transported to a “dry cell,” a cell without plumbing, for observation, Trooper Michael Adams said. Witnesses claimed Place was “working herself up” after handcuffs were placed on her, Adams added.

Place allegedly screamed at staff members, according to the complaint, and claimed she couldn’t breathe due to wearing a smock.

Several staff members worked together to put Place on a bed, Adams wrote. Once on her back, officers attempted to handcuff Place, who allegedly bit one in response, according to Adams. The officer allegedly reacted by slapping Place across the face.

Both Place and the officer were evaluated and cleared by medical staff, Adams said.

State police were given an investigative packet on the incident in the middle of March. It corroborated statements given to investigators, according to Adams.

Place is being charged with second-degree felony assault by a prisoner and simple assault. Her bail is set at $50,000 monetary. She is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing in May.

Place was in custody on a parole violation.
