Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen announced that a Hilo man, 41 year-old Kory Yoshio Maeda, was arrested and charged with offenses related to the attempted distribution of methamphetamine, fentanyl, and oxycodone and possession of cocaine and heroin. Emergency Proclamation Extends 24-Hour Patrol at Former Uncle Billy's Hilo Bay Hotel Due to Asbestos Concerns
On September 18, 2023, Governor Josh Green issued a second Emergency Proclamation. This was to establish round-the-clock law enforcement at the former Uncle Billy's Hilo Bay Hotel. This action was due to a preliminary finding of possible asbestos in the deserted building. The proclamation extends the emergency relief period, which was set on July 18, 2023, until November 13, 2023. This is due to safety concerns after several breaches of the newly installed perimeter fence.
