Williamsburg CEOS club makes plans for today and beyond
The Williamsburg Community Educational Outreach Service Club met at the Williamsburg Historical Museum for their monthly meeting on Jun. 13. The club recently completed a service project by making and donating 25 heart pillows to be used at CAMC. T-shirts were also donated to the Greenbrier Valley Children’s Home. Also, the club donated funds to the county Energy Express program along with cereal boxes for their summer projects. Baldwin Memorial Scholarships awarded to 12 Greenbrier County seniors
In May, the Greenbrier County Schools Foundation awarded Stephen L. Baldwin Memorial Scholarships to 12 Greenbrier County high school seniors. Recipients selected for the $1,000 scholarship awards were: Cadence Stewart, Makayla Walton, Lauren Rodgers, Clara Long, Jacelyn Lilly, Nicole Cochran, Mackenzie Friend, Meghan Byers and Cedric Allder from Greenbrier East High School. Receiving the awards from Greenbrier West High School were Raelyn Palmer, Meagan Poticher, and Emma Ames.
Cranberry Mountain Nature Center hosts Native Orchid Tour
Monongahela National Forest invites everyone to join us at the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center for the annual Native Orchid Tour Saturday, Jun. 24, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program begins at the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center with a presentation followed by a guided trip to Cranberry Glades and the surrounding area. Rosanna Springston, Monongahela National Forest employee and wildflower enthusiast, will lead the tour. The program is free and takes place rain or shine. Reservations are not required. Wear appropriate footwear for hiking.
Ivy Terrace Concert Series continues with The Thomas Taylor Band
Carnegie Hall’s 2023 Ivy Terrace Concert Series continues Thursday, Jun. 22, at 6:30 p.m. with The Thomas Taylor Band. Sponsored by City National Bank, the concert takes place outside on Carnegie Hall’s Ivy Terrace as attendees watch from the expansive lawn in front of New River Community and Technical College. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket and pack a picnic to enjoy live music. All Ivy Terrace concerts are free, open to the public, and alcohol free.
GVT channels feel-good nostalgia with upcoming production
Greenbrier Valley Theatre (GVT) will look to transport audiences back to the 1950s and ‘60s with their upcoming production of Forever Plaid. Featuring songs such as “Crazy ‘Bout Ya Baby,” “Papa Loves to Mambo,” “Three Coins in the Fountain,” and many others, this show will have audience members reminiscing of a simpler time. Forever Plaid, written by Stuart Ross, tells the story of four men known as the Plaids who are ready to perform their final concert together in an upbeat nostalgia trip that is sure to delight audiences of all ages.

American Legion Post 100 commemorates Memorial Day
On May 29, American Legion Post 100 held a brief Memorial Day commemoration in Union. The event, now in its eighth year, consisted of an invocation, singing the National Anthem, remarks by Post 100 Commander Tim Sluss, recitation of Theodore O’Hara’s poem “Bivouac of the Dead” by Chris Johnson, a reading of Major General John A. Logan’s first official 1868 Memorial Day Proclamation by Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Scott E. Womack, a wreath and flower laying at the Veteran’s Memorial adjacent to the courthouse, and the playing of “Taps” after the National Moment of Silence at 3 p.m. This year’s event was scaled down due to inclement weather, but a few intrepid citizens came out anyway to remember those who paid the ultimate price to secure our liberties. Post 100 intends to continue this annual event to coincide with the national commemoration, and the public is always encouraged to attend.
Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1108 visits the National Capitol
The West Virginia Vietnam Veterans of America (WV VVA) Maverick Chapter #1108 traveled to the National Capitol Region on May 13-14 and sponsored five local youths on the trip: Caleb Cooper, Matthew Heller, LeiAnn Richmond, Eli Thomas, and Katherine Viars. The intent of the trip was to provide a chance for these two generations to reflect on the service rendered by citizens who have served their country in uniform since its founding.

The annual Kellwood reunion will be held Friday, June 9, at the Charlie Mackey Park in Maxwelton. It’s been 30 years since the Kellwood plant closed its doors for the last time in 1993. The covered dish meal will begin at 12 noon. Former employees, their families and friends are invited to attend. Plan to stay after the meal for socializing and taking pictures.
Peoples Bank Foundation donates to Communities In Schools of Greenbrier County

Barger family provides funding for sustainability and scholarships at WVSOM
The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) installed three solar-powered charging stations to support sustainability on campus. The solar units attach to picnic tables and will accommodate four outlets each.
