BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — The man charged in the death of a teenage girl in a car crash they were both involved in last summer has been denied youthful offender status.

Gabriel Alexander Uncapher was denied youthful offender status by Judge Shanta Craig Owens on Wednesday, according to court documents. Uncapher was 19 years old when he and Virginia Elizabeth “Cricket” Davis were in a car accident where the Jeep Grand Cherokee they were traveling in struck a guardrail along Hwy. 280 in the early morning hours of June 18, 2023. Davis was instantly killed in the crash.

On Sept. 26, Uncapher was arrested and charged with manslaughter in Davis’ death. He was indicted by a grand jury on manslaughter charges last December.

According to the civil lawsuit filed against Uncapher, he and Davis had been to a concert at Zydeco prior to the crash. Lawyers representing Davis’ estate claim Uncapher was allegedly driving drunk before the crash.

Davis, 19, had just finished her first year at the University of Alabama at the time of her death.

A pretrial hearing has been set for June 6.
