16 year old arrested in connection with report of shots fired in Mt. Vernon

A 16 year old is in custody in connection with a shooting in Mount Vernon, Ill. on Saturday night, May 27.

MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (KFVS) - A 16 year old is in custody in connection with a shooting Saturday night, May 27.

The juvenile is facing charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, reckless discharge of a firearm, armed violence and felony resisting arrest.

He was taken to the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Facility pending a court date in Jefferson County.

According to a release from the Mount Vernon Police Department, officers responded to a report of shots fired around 9:31 p.m. in the area of 19th Street and Conger Avenue.

They say initial reports indicated that a male wearing a ski mask had fired shots from a blue Dodge Avenger. Officers found the vehicle and pulled it over in the area of 13th Street and Jones Street.

According to police, after the vehicle came to a stop, a male wearing a ski mask fled from the vehicle and headed into a wooded area.

A K-9 team and officers tracked the wooded area and found the 16 year old. They say he had a loaded firearm on him.

The teen was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained while he was taken into custody.

At the time of arrest, police say he was wanted on a Jefferson County warrant for possession of a stolen firearm and armed violence.
