It's Election Day. What would a bluer legislature mean for higher ed in NC?

Hello reader! Welcome to Higher Stakes , your source for higher education news in North Carolina. I’m reporter Jane Winik Sartwell . It’s Election Day ! What a wild election season it’s been. Our politics team has been working tirelessly to bring you breaking news, important fact checks, and in-depth analysis ahead of today. And now, the long-awaited Tuesday is here. So go vote if you haven’t already. Here’s our voter guide . And keep up with all our coverage tonight at newsobserver.com . With President Donald Trump’s approval at an all-time-low, a blue wave could come crashing in North Carolina, congressional impact reporter Danielle Battaglia wrote yesterday . That has implications for state politics as well. What would a bluer legislature mean for higher ed in NC? There’s a chance that by the end of the night, Republicans could lose their supermajority in the state Senate — and possibly even their majority in the state House, Capitol bureau chief Dawn Baumgartner Vaughan reported last week . What would that mean for higher education in North Carolina? The General Assembly appoints the UNC System Board of Governors, as well as select members of university boards of trustees across the state.

Beloved NC high school student with Down syndrome scores TD on Senior Night

All week long, South Mecklenburg High football coach Joe Evans told Evan Pech that he was going to score a touchdown. Pech, 17, is a senior who loves WWE wrestling and football. He has Down syndrome, a genetic condition that affects 1 in about 6,000 newborns in the US annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The condition can alter how the brain and body develop. Last Friday was likely South Meck’s last home game of the season, and the last home game of Pech’s high school career. Coach Evans wanted to make it memorable. “I go get Evan on Tuesdays and he comes with me and goes to (football) practice,” Joe Evans said, “and then he goes to the JV games on Thursdays. But this past week, against Garinger, it was our Senior Night, and he’s a senior.” So Evans called Garinger coach Jupiter Wilson and arranged for a pre-game play. South Meck would line up at the Garinger 20 and Evan would get the ball. And Evan would score. And everybody would go crazy. “So I call Jupiter,” Evans said, “and I asked, ‘Would you guys be willing?’ Jupiter’s a great dude and he’s like,

Ahead of Midterms, U.S. University Faculty Report Self-Censoring On DEI, Politics

Six in 10 faculty members told Inside Higher Ed in a new survey that their enthusiasm for working in higher education has somewhat or significantly declined over the past two years. Headlines since 2024 offer plenty of possible explanations for their growing fatigue: The federal government has slashed research budgets and politicians have painted professors as boogeymen. State legislatures are exerting increasing controlover how and what faculty discuss in the classroom, and even tenured professors have lost their jobs over social media posts. Artificial intelligence, now ubiquitous, has touched nearly every part of professors’ jobs, from teaching and grading to research and publishing.
