Club West Brewing distribution facility sells to prominent Charlotte developer

An entity tied to Club West, the rebranded Sycamore , has sold the brewery's offices and production facility near Camp North End to a prominent Charlotte developer for $6.65 million. Why it matters: While Club West Brewing's taproom has been consistently packed since the Sycamore scandal, the brewery previously acknowledged the distribution business wasn't rebounding the same way. The latest: West Twenty Fourth LLC, an LLC tied to Sycamore's co-founder Sarah Taylor, sold the building to Summit Avenue West 24th, an LLC tied to Matthew Browder, owner at Browder Brown real estate firm, on Nov. 4, property records show. West Twenty Fourth LLC previously bought the building for $5.2 million in 2024. Flashback: CBJ reported in 2017 that Sycamore was investing $2.5 million in building out the North End facility. It would grow its beer production by 16 times, with enough capacity to produce up to 80,000 barrels a year, the report stated. The lease between Club West and West Twenty Fourth LLC was terminated the same day as the sale, records show. The big picture: Browder for years has been assembling more than 30 acres of land in the surrounding area, including the Starbucks down the street and 9-plus

The Hornets are buying the old Epicentre in a joint venture

Hornets Sports & Entertainment is acquiring and plans to revitalize Queen City Quarter — aka the Epicentre — in a joint venture with two real estate firms. Why it matters: The Hornets bring the built-in customer base, capital and literal buzz that may be necessary to revive Uptown's once-booming party central, right next to Spectrum Center. This could also be the missing piece to the Hornets' long-desired "entertainment district" along Trade Street. Flashback: Before South End was cool, the Epicentre used to be the place to be for Charlotte's nightlife. After its initial owners filed for Chapter 11 protection in 2010, it turned into a ghost town during COVID. It gained a reputation for crime and went into foreclosure in 2022. Most of the popular bars and businesses shuttered. It hasn't been the same since, even after the new property managers CBRE promised to turn it into a family-friendly destination. The latest: The Hornets' ownership is partnering with firms Lincoln Property Company and Vision Ventures. A sales price was not disclosed. A press release says they intend to "revitalize" and "reimagine" the property "as a vibrant destination," but it offered no specifics. Axios has reached out for comment. The intrigue:

Charlotte envisioned as 'the Silicon Valley' of energy grid modernization

The Charlotte region could become "the Silicon Valley" of energy grid modernization, according to a UNC Charlotte professor. Why it matters: Charlotte's growth has created a demand for energy, both in terms of residential use and manufacturing. What they're saying: "We envision this region becoming kind of the Silicon Valley of the grid," UNC Charlotte professor and Energy Production & Infrastructure Center (EPIC) executive director Rob Cox said Monday at a Charlotte Regional Business Alliance energy roundtable. This includes grid modernization and infrastructure. State of play: Cox's vision would see UNC Charlotte in a similar position to that of Stanford University in Silicon Valley. This would allow UNC Charlotte to lead "because of partnerships," he says. "If we're going to build affordable and reliable power, we're going to need to be able to train workforce to be able to operate and design," Cox says. Between the lines: A key piece is seeing innovation implemented faster. "It's very easy to come up with new ideas that will help the grid," Cox tells Axios. "It's very, very difficult to get those things adopted." It can take up to 15 years to go from concept to adoption and around half a billion dollars,
