BAR HARBOR — Though the Mount Desert Island High School baseball and softball teams are both currently slated to participate in the 2023 Class B playoff tournament, recent losses toward the end of the regular season have put their chances of making the tournament in doubt.
The softball team put forth a valiant effort against Old Town last week, the current three-seed in Class B North, with the Trojans unable to overcome a three-run first inning deficit rung up by the Coyotes and ultimately falling 4-2. Addie Boyce struck out 13 over seven innings of work in the game, while Lexi Tozier and Grace Horner each drove in a run.
But a 7-0 loss to Hermon on May 29 knocked MDI’s record to 6-9. Boyce again had double-digit strikeouts, with 12 on the day, and surrendered just one earned run. But the Trojans committed four errors in the field and were unable to get the bats going, mustering only four hits.
MDI is currently sitting in tenth place in the Heal Point Standings, which represents the final playoff-eligible spot. The Trojans are just ahead of John Bapst, though the Crusaders’ season has already finished. Results of MDI’s final game against Ellsworth on Wednesday were unknown at press time, but could potentially drop the Trojans below John Bapst and out of playoff contention.
The baseball team is a little more secure, sitting in ninth place and well ahead of the tenth-place Hermon Hawks. It was those Hawks who handed MDI a tough 3-2 loss on Memorial Day. The Trojans took an early 1-0 lead, but Hermon plated three runs in the fifth and held on for the win, potentially securing themselves the final playoff spot in the process.
If the current standings hold, the baseball team would take on Waterville (8-7) while softball would play Oceanside (9-7) in the prelim rounds of their respective tournaments. Both of those games are scheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 6.
