Michigan Avenue bus rides may be a little faster now
A new bus-only lane operating on Michigan Avenue could speed up travel for thousands of commuters and tourists traveling through the Loop. Why it matters: The nearly 1.5-mile lane from Roosevelt to Wacker aims to improve bus service for the estimated 22,000 people who use that stretch each weekday. CTA has not estimated how much time the lane will save riders each day, a spokesperson tells Axios. By the numbers: About 1,490 buses on 21 routes use at least part of the new bus lane, according to the CTA. More than 7 million riders travel the route annually. The lane cost $543,000 to install, a Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) spokesperson tells Axios. What they're saying: "The benefits of the bus lane will have ripple effects across CTA's entire network and make traveling easier for the thousands of riders every day, including doctors, students, tourists, and many others who rely on the bus to get where they need to go," CTA Acting President Nora Leerhsen said in a statement. "This bright red bus lane in the heart of the city sends an important message to residents and visitors alike that public transit is a priority for our region." Context: The

Home Avenue bridge to get a new look— and a new purpose
The first thing I noticed crossing the Home Avenue bridge was the honking. As cars passed through Oak Park on the Eisenhower Expressway, a small group of protesters had posted up a “Make America Affordable Again” sign over the village’s only pedestrian bridge, and countless drivers were honking in support.

It’s a new era for CTA, Metra and Pace as the Northern Illinois Transit Authority becomes the new oversight agency for all three systems. NITA officially replaced the Regional Transportation Authority last month after being created by the Illinois General Assembly as part of a $1.5 billion transit bill in October 2025. The change aims to establish a more efficient way to run and fund Chicago-area public transit after years of debate exacerbated by the loss in revenue from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Let’s not be whisper quiet!
By now, you likely have heard how a developer wants to run a high-speed train that will whip through River Forest, Melrose Park, Forest Park, and 11 other communities on its 80+ mph journey from O’Hare to Downtown Chicago. Dave Lundy, the developer, brags that it will run every 15 minutes from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. [1] Counting trains in both directions, it’s actually every 7.5 minutes, and 144 times per day. That doesn’t include possible nightly freight trains that could be in play.
