Moriarty-Area Murder Suspect Arrested in Albuquerque
A man wanted in connection with a Moriarty-area murder earlier in the month has been arrested. Steven Banda, 48, was picked up Sept. 21 by the U.S. Marshals Service District of New Mexico – Southwest Investigative Fugitive Team without incident in northwest Albuquerque “following an exhaustive investigation by multiple local, state and federal agencies,” according to a Marshals Service news release.

Santa Fe County’s Taylor White was crowned the 2024 New Mexico State Fair Queen Saturday, Sept. 16 during a ceremony on the last weekend of the annual fair. Input sought on Sandia Crest Recreation Complex Renovation Project
BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – The Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands is seeking input on the proposed Sandia Crest Recreation Complex Renovation Project. The project area is located at the crest of the Sandia Mountains, just over 10,000 feet in elevation. The Sandia Ranger District proposes to improve and reconstruct portions of the Sandia Crest Recreation area to bring the site up to current standards, decrease short- and long-term maintenance needs, and to provide a sustainable recreation site. This proposal does not include the Crest House.

FBI: Torreon Man To Spend 4 Years In Prison For Assault
ALBUQUERQUE — Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, announced Thursday that Monty Joe Montoya, 43, of Torreon, and an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, was sentenced to four years in prison. Montoya pled guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury March 31, 2023.

Gov. Lujan Grisham Curtails Gun Ban
Following multiple legal challenges in federal and state court—including one filed late last week with the state Supreme Court by the National Rifle Association, the state Republican Party, the state Libertarian Party and a variety of other folks—Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Friday morning issued updates to the public health order that replace the order’s original 30-day suspension of open and concealed weapon carry in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County to one that temporarily suspends carrying firearms at parks and playgrounds in those areas (the Santa Fe City Council last January passed a resolution banning weapons on any public property used for school activities). The governor’s revision followed US District Judge David Urias Sept. 13 granting of a temporary restraining order of the original provision, which the governor enacted Sept. 8, citing the shooting deaths of three children since July—including an 11-year-old boy two days prior.
