WVU Outfielder Hits the Transfer Portal

Last week, West Virginia lost a key piece to its starting pitching rotation with Friday night starter Ben Hampton throwing his name into the NCAA transfer portal.

Now, the Mountaineers have lost some outfield depth as Evan Smith announced his intentions to do the same Wednesday morning.

Smith would have been in line to compete for a larger role in 2024 after seeing minimal playing time this season. In 25 games, Smith went 6-for-35 at the dish (.171 avg) with a pair of doubles and six RBI. The sophomore struck out 14 times and drew five walks, giving him an on-base percentage of .310.

Smith will have two years of eligibility remaining.
