CBS Sports’ college football writers came together to vote on the best and worst coaches heading into the 2023 season.
MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — The West Virginia Mountaineers head into the 2023 college football season with almost no expectations of competing in the Big 12 Conference. Under Neal Brown, the Mountaineers are 22-25 overall and 15-21 in conference play. With that, Brown is considered by many to be the worst head coach in the Big 12 Conference.
CBS Sports recently released its rankings of the head coaches nationally and in the Big 12 Conference, and it’s not surprising where Neal Brown ranked. According to CBS Sports, Brown is dead last, ranked the 14th (out of 14) in the conference.
Here’s what CBS Sports had to say about Brown: “West Virginia has been consistent through four years under Neal Brown, but not with the degree of success the program would have preferred. The Mountaineers have a pair of five-win seasons with Brown at the helm and two six-win campaigns, as well, making them a below-average team in the Big 12. Brown gets another chance to crack the top half of the league standings and break through in year five, but the track record does not inspire much confidence in predicting that outcome.”
In addition to ranking 14th out of 14 coaches in the Big 12, Brown was also ranked 59th out of 69 Power 5 Conference head coaches.
